Chapter | HISTORY 

 

The journey of the Alpha Gamma Nu Omega Chapter began in December 2021, when Lacky Adkins felt a divine calling to establish a new chapter in the Research Triangle Park area. Motivated by a desire to expand the reach of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® and foster genuine fellowship, Lacky reached out to Ms. Jennifer King Congleton, the 19th Mid-Atlantic Regional Director. With her support and guidance, Lacky began gathering a diverse group of women who shared the vision of faith, service, and sisterhood.​

 

During this intentional season of selection, we were further blessed to transition into gaining our current 20th Mid-Atlantic Regional Director, Ms. Nadine Vargas Stewart.  Lacky Adkins met with Ms. Nadine Vargas Stewart on December 14, 2022, and gained greater details about the Interest Group application process and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Directors strategic growth goals. On May 2, 2023, the Interest group met collectively and received the application package to become an official Interest Group from Regional Director Ms. Nadine Vargas Stewart.​

 

In May 2022, the interest group formed and began meeting regularly, partnering with local schools and organizations to serve the community. We partnered with Brogden Middle School to provide the school with over 100 bookbags, filled with supplies and classroom supplies for staffers.  We donated clothes and organized their clothing closet for their clothing insecure population of students and families. We coordinated a “Let’s Start the Menopause Conversation” brunch in collaboration with the Durham Links, Incorporated at First Calvary Baptist Church and had our first joint worship service experience. We assisted with the MLK Day of Service Feed the Hungry Initiative at Lyons Park with First Calvary Baptist Church and exceeded the goal by preparing over 13,000 bags of food.  We executed over 15 service projects as an Interest Group while patiently waiting for our application submission approvals. The group’s commitment to service and sisterhood continued to grow, culminating in the approval from the Directorate to become an official Interest Group of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. ​ 

 

On Saturday, November 9, 2024, the Pearls of Research Triangle Park received a favorable vote approval from the Directorate to Charter a new Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® graduate chapter. On December 12, 2024, Alpha Gamma Nu Omega Chapter was officially chartered, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® in the Durham and Research Triangle Park surrounding areas.
